Internation Relationship Building through Education

The Marine Resources Initiative (MRI) project was established to spearhead transformative approaches to marine conservation and management by integrating advanced technology, stakeholder engagement and evidence based policy making. The MRI project aims to safeguard marine ecosystems while enhancing their contributions to sustainable development. The objectives of the project are to equip the province of Palawan, Philippines, with advanced data and techniques to enhance coastal understanding strengthen climate resilience promote sustainable environment to management and elevate the recognition of its coastal and offshore features.

This project is facilitated in the Philippines by the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS) and is the vehicle through which the Australian Government have been undertaking Relationship Building with the Philippines Government. One of the initiatives under this engagement has been a provision of IBSC Recognised S-8B Nautical Cartographer training to personnel from NAMRIA (the Philippines Hydrographic Authority and the Philippines Navy Meteorological and Oceanographic command (NAVMETOC. The charting of coastal waters that results from this training not only supports safety of navigation, but also trade, environmental management and Defence.

On Friday the 22nd of May 2026 a graduation ceremony was held at Tagaytay Philippines attended by senior officials from both the Australian and Philippines governments. Australia was represented by senior officials from the Australian Embassy, Defence/Australian Hydrographic Office and Geoscience Australia, while the Philippines contingent included senior leadership from PCSDS, NAMRIA and NAVMETOC. The ceremony was utilised to present certificates to 17 Philippines personnel, one from Revelare Australian and another from Hong Kong.

The ceremony included speeches and presentations reflecting on both the success of the Program and strength and long standing relationship between Australia and Philippines Government. It was not coincidence that this graduation occurred on the 80th Anniversary of Australia Philippines Friendship Day.

@IIC Academy was privileged to have delivered this Program training for a second consecutive year, @IIC was represented at the graduation attended by @David Crossword Managing Director Oceania, and Nuno Rodrigo Silva, senior instructor. Nuno giving a presentation on the objectives of this programs and the various training (recognised and bespoke) provided by the Academy, While David spoke on IIC’s capabilities (land, sea and air) but with a particular focus on IIC’s Marine capability and a deep dive into IIC’s suit of S-100 solutions and services, being is a recognised need for most countries in the region.

Congratulations to all the graduating students, we take pride in knowing that you will be supporting the national outcomes of the Philippines including safety navigation, trade, economy Environment Management and Defence; and of course Happy Philippines Australia Friendship Day .
