Land, Sea and Air Surveying for Kiribati’s Future

posted in development by admin

A multi-year geospatial survey led by IIC Technologies Ltd. has helped the Republic of Kiribati strengthen safety of navigation, climate resilience, and national planning capacity.

Undertaken as part of the Kiribati Outer Islands Transport Infrastructure Investment Project (KOITIIP), funded by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, the initiative focused on four Outer Islands: Tabiteuea, Nonouti, Abaiang, and Beru with additional surveys of Betio Wharf and Tarawa Lagoon.

Using integrated airborne, terrestrial, and marine survey techniques, IIC Technologies collected high accuracy LiDAR, MBES, and imagery data to create seamless coastal and seabed models. The resulting datasets are now being used by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) to update official charts and electronic navigation products.

Through IIC Academy’s S-5B Hydrographic Surveying Program and S-8B Marine Geospatial Information Program, local professionals also received training to strengthen Kiribati’s long term hydrographic capability.
