IIC Contributions to the Pacific Geospatial and Survey Council

posted in development by admin

Geospatial information underpins the majority of economic and sustainable development activities in the world today. The services provided by Pacific Island geospatial scientists and surveyors contribute to the security and well-being of Pacific people, supporting numerous industries and sectors. These include natural resource management, civil engineering, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, transport, land ownership, health, and agriculture to name a few.

The Pacific Geospatial and Surveying Council, also known as the PGSC, is an independent regional advisory body that provides a forum for Pacific Island geospatial information and survey authorities to discuss and address regional challenges. With a vision of “Sustainable development in the Pacific enabled by world-class geospatial information and surveying services”, the PGSC is Proudly ‘by the Pacific Region, for the Pacific Region’.

IIC Australasia were honoured to be invited as observers to the four PGSC Working Groups 28-31 July 20 and were able to provide input to a number of areas of activity and interest to these groups. They also attended Councils’ annual meeting 12-13 August 20; where IIC’s Dr David Dodd was utilised as member of a discussion panel and provided a presentation on the work that he recently undertook to identify and resolve anomalies in a Pacific Islands’ geodetic height information, the subsequent development of a GEOID model for that nation and the value of GEOID models for Pacific Island Nations. The IIC contribution was well received and Dr Dodd’s presentation generated good discussion.
